Depression

Depression is not a disease or a ‘biological illness’ although like any strong emotion it has biological consequences .

Clinical depression is caused by too much worrying, negative introspection and rumination on unresolved problems and anxieties. This ‘build up of worry’ increases the amount of time a depressed person spends in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Depressed people dream up to three times as much as when they are not depressed - this causes daytime exhaustion.

Relaxation, problem solving and more productive ways of thinking actually diminish REM sleep and so rapidly lift the symptoms of depression.

Your Uncommon therapist will relax you, get you thinking more realistically and productively and help reduce energy sapping over dreaming giving you more energy. You wi’ll learn skills that will help you stay out of depression in future and really understand depression when it happens to others.

If you are depressed, it is vital that you get the right sort of help - the wrong sort can make depression worse. Uncommon Therapists are trained in the approaches outlined on the Depression Learning Path.
