Depression is not a disease or a ‘biological illness’ although like any strong emotion it has biological consequences .

Clinical depression is caused by too much worrying, negative introspection and rumination on unresolved problems and anxieties. This ‘build up of worry’ increases the amount of time a depressed person spends in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Depressed people dream up to three times as much as when they are not depressed - this causes daytime exhaustion.

Relaxation, problem solving and more productive ways of thinking actually diminish REM sleep and so rapidly lift the symptoms of depression.
